Dan, Larry, and Cindy join Tim to recap the Regional results and engage in wild and irresponsible guessing about who will be in the Top 40 in Fort Lauderdale. [Update: A highly reliable source tells us that Upper St. Clair, Swedesboro, Binghamton, and Richmond Hill have all received and accepted wildcard invitations.]

National Finals registration deadline is May 27. Information can be found at BQ.AG.org.

Wildcard Guesses

The Powers-That-Be HATE this kind of thing. That’s why it’s going here on the BQP page, and not on Facebook or the Forum. (Remember the Forum? Yeah, good times.) The Powers-That-Be say, “Why can’t everyone just wait? Why do they have to talk? Why do they have to speculate?”

Because it’s fun. And a complete waste of time. And we’ll stay off your lawn, we promise.

So, while we wait for the Official List of teams going to National Finals in Fort Lauderdale, who are the 8 teams you think will receive a wildcard invitation?

First, let’s assume we know who the first 32 are. These are the 32 teams that placed in the top 4 in their Region, including Fort Lauderdale, who really placed fifth, but will be going in the place of Southeast Regional Champ, Montgomery.

Assuming these are the first 32, then who are the last 8, the teams that will receive the 8 available wildcard spots?

Here are my guesses…

A sure thing

1. Upper St. Clair, PA

2. Swedesboro, NJ

These two teams finished just out of automatic status in the toughest Region in the nation.

3. Binghamton, NY

4. Richmond Hill, NY

Two more teams from the Northeast. Neither finished well in the NE standings, but wildcards aren’t about wins and losses, they are about points, and these two teams scored a lot of points on some of the toughest set of Regional questions we’ve ever seen.

If you look at points – and that’s all the wildcard criteria is about – these teams have to be invited.

Highly Likely

5. Mechanicsville, VA

Josh Weber’s team becomes the fifth NE team to get a wildcard.

6. CT Church

7. Noble, OK

These two South Central teams scored well in another high scoring region.

And the final spot goes to…

8. Dublin, OH

This Great Lakes team gets the nod over another NE team, Newport, PA. If Newport were invited instead, it wouldn’t be surprising, but Dublin’s 129 point average is tough to overlook, even though their Region as a whole didn’t handle Kent’s questions very well.

And this disclaimer

I have no idea. I don’t know the actual formula/divination used in determining who gets a wildcard invitation. This really is just guessing.

The other unknown is who will actually¬†accept an invitation. It’s costly to get to South Florida. It’s also been reported that some teams have been scared off by the tough questions. There might be other teams – like Montgomery – who have previous obligations that will keep them from accepting an invitation. Also, I think a couple of the automatic qualifiers might have already declined.

But, hey, those are just realities we are free to ignore when we speculate wildly. So go ahead. Dream with me. Who do YOU think should get an invite?

(And have you looked to see who that leaves out? MY list would leave out a very good 8-7 team from the Northeast and a few teams that were 9-4 at their Regionals.)
